Modafinil half-life
Modafinil is a prescription wakefulness-promoting agent, and its effective elimination half-life after repeated dosing is about 15 hours, which is why it is taken once daily. At that clearance rate a portion carries over from one dose to the next, so blood levels build to a steady state over roughly 2 to 4 days. Modafinil is a 50/50 mix of two mirror-image forms, and the R-form clears about 3 times slower than the S-form, so by the end of the dosing interval most of what remains in the blood is the longer-lived R-form (the same molecule sold separately as armodafinil).
What a half-life actually means
A half-life is the time it takes for half of what is in your blood to be gone. It does not mean the compound is finished at that point. Half goes, then half of what is left goes, and so on.
That is why the last traces take so much longer to disappear than the first. Most references treat something as effectively cleared after about five half-lives, which for Modafinil is roughly 3.1 days.
